The Last of Us‘ Joel (Pedro Pascal) tells Ellie (Bella Ramsey) his three rules in a new trailer video. Based on the critically-acclaimed Naughty Dog video game of the same name, HBO’s The Last of Us will center on the relationship between Joel and Ellie, an unlikely pair traveling together in a post-apocalyptic world. Previous trailers have highlighted the unique bond between the pair, which grows into a meaningful and emotional relationship for both parties. In a new video, their dynamic continues to be explored.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Last of Us posted a new teaser for the series via Instagram, offering a glimpse at Joel’s more authoritative side as he lays down the law for Ellie as they start their journey. Joel’s rules – not reveal anything about their pasts, not let anyone know about Ellie’s immunity to the Cordyceps virus, and follow Joel’s every command – are intercut with brief sequences, hinting that the rules will be difficult for each character to follow. In addition, the HBO series continues to prove itself as an extremely faithful adaptation of the game, with the trailer’s lines coming straight from The Last of Us video game. See the post below:

Pascal And Ramsey Are A Perfect Joel And Ellie

Pascal is a strong choice for the character of Joel, especially after successfully portraying a similarly tortured paternal figure in The Mandalorian. Ramsey, in turn, played a precocious young girl as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, but Ellie differs greatly from that character in many ways. Outside their previous roles, Pascal and Ramsey’s chemistry on-screen and off has been made clear in the previously released clips from The Last of Us and the pair’s comments about their bond, proving that they have what it takes to adapt Joel and Ellie’s fraught and touching relationship.

The Hype For The Last Of Us, Explained

Pascal and Ramsey have displayed that they truly understand their characters’ personalities and motivations, a promising indicator that they will prioritize bringing the characters to life accurately. The video game boasts a massive fan following and earned high levels of critical acclaim, leading to a passionate built-in fan base for the series. HBO has invested a great deal into the show, reportedly leading it to become the largest television production ever filmed in Canada. While the high budget has garnered more anticipation for The Last of Us and indicates HBO’s faith that it will be received well, it is a risk considering the track record of video game-to-screen adaptations.

Luckily, The Last of Us is setting the bar high for video game adaptations, with several previously released clips from the series featuring almost exact recreations of scenes from the game. The show has also brought in plenty of talents from the video game, with the game’s creator Neil Druckmann serving as the show’s co-creator and the game’s composer Gustavo Santaolalla returning, along with Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and several other actors from the games. The Last of Us is expected to be a faithful and fascinating adaptation of the beloved game, which has led to much anticipation for the HBO show.

The Last of Us will premiere on January 15 on HBO.
