Quantumania Proves The MCU Is Still Failing 1 Important Avenger

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania proves that the MCU is failing one major Avenger, as Hope, Janet, and Hank’s story left one with a small role.

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania!

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania proves that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still failing Wasp. The Ant-Man franchise has grown in importance to the future of the MCU as each film has come out. This has especially been true when it comes to the future of the Avengers. The movies have propped up Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang to join the Avengers, laid the foundation for the time travel mission in Avengers: Endgame, and set up Kang the Conqueror and the Council of Kangs before Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Most of these examples have helped raise Ant-Man’s profile within the shared universe.

While Ant-Man’s status in the MCU has continued to rise, the franchise has not always done justice to other characters commonly associated with the Avengers in the comics. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania helps correct some of these past mistakes. The Phase 5 movie gives Janet van Dyne a prominent role in the film after her surprisingly small role in the last film. It also takes time to let Hank Pym and his ants play the role of hero. As great as it is to see more of Hank and Janet in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it meant the MCU failed Wasp once again.

Wasp Plays A Surprisingly Small Role In Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania

evangeline lilly as hope van dyne aka the wasp in ant-man and the wasp quantumania

Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne surprisingly has a very small part to play in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. She is separated from Scott for the majority of the film and spends that time with her parents. However, Hank and Janet’s stories are more so the focus of this portion of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. This left Wasp to mostly be along for the ride as she learned about Kang the Conqueror, pushing her more to the side. While Hope is awarded the opportunity to be a bit more involved in the action, her perspective is largely lost in the sequel despite her technically still being the co-lead of the movie franchise.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania giving Wasp such a small role is the latest example of the MCU failing the character. Hope was overshadowed in the original Ant-Man despite being the more capable candidate to suit up. Marvel then left her out of Captain America: Civil War despite the tease that she was becoming Wasp. Ant-Man and the Wasp finally managed to give her some respect and prove her ability as a superhero, but then she was also snapped out of existence. This left her with little to do in Avengers: Endgame‘s final battle, but Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was supposed to be another chance for her to shine.

The MCU Can Do Wasp Justice In Phase 6 By Making Her An Avenger

The MCU has an easy way to stop failing Wasp after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania by making her a proper Avenger in Phase 6. Since the team is expected to get a new look in Phase 6, Wasp needs to be part of the next roster. It would be an opportunity for the MCU to finally give Wasp her due and honor the fact that the character was an original member of the Avengers in the comics, even if it was Janet instead of Hope. Having Wasp join the Avengers in Phase 6 can help give her a prominent role once again.
