MCU Star Simu Liu Has Sweet Reunion With Co-Stars From Breakout Role

MCU’s Shang-Chi star Simu Liu has a sweet reunion with some of his co-stars from his breakout role in Kim’s Convenience in a heartwarming post.
Nearly two years after the series came to a close, Marvel Cinematic Universe star Simu Liu has had a sweet reunion with the co-stars from his breakout role in Kim’s Convenience. Long before becoming an household name with his turn as the MCU’s Shang-Chi in the eponymous 2021 film, Liu was scoring rave reviews for his performance in the Canadian sitcom Kim’s Convenience, which revolved around the titular family as they run their store in Toronto while also attempting to mend their various conflicts. Based on Ins Choi’s play, the series became an international hit upon its Netflix debut, which would go on to distribute the show for seasons 3-5, the latter of which marked the end after Choi and co-creator Kevin White’s departures to focus on other projects, including the spinoff Strays.
As audiences eagerly await his upcoming projects, MCU star Simu Liu recently had a sweet reunion with a couple of co-stars from his breakout role in Kim’s Convenience.
The post, as shared by Andrew Phung, sees the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings actor partaking in an energetic group hug with his on-screen father, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, and on-screen best friend. The heartwarming photo was paired with a caption calling the Kim’s Convenience reunion a “Guys Night Out” between the three stars.
Will A Kim’s Convenience Revival Ever Happen?
With the show becoming a true sleeper hit after being picked up by Netflix, the early cancellation of Kim’s Convenience left fans of the series disappointed, namely as it came prior to its initial planned season 6 that would end the series. Given it ended a whole season early, there have been questions about a potential revival at some point in the future, a prospect that seems very unlikely considering the production issues that have been revealed in the wake of the show’s cancellation. Liu and Lee have both come out with disappointments and frustrations regarding the writing process behind the show, with the patriarch actor indicating that it all crumbled from within while the future MCU star criticized the show’s lack of diversity in the writers room and not allowing the actors to offer creative input.
The two would later be supported by Kim’s Convenience co-star Jean Yoon, who called her time on the show “painful” and led to her feeling disillusioned with the project as a whole. Despite these various frustrations, however, Liu has not entirely closed the door on a potential return to the series, noting that the only way he would do so is if the “right people” were involved in a new season and wants to ensure he and his co-stars are not affected by the same “gatekeepers” as they encountered prior. While the Kim’s Convenience reunion post likely doesn’t signal anything more than a heartwarming gathering of friends, the fact they are still in touch with one another is sure to keep hopes alive they could strive for a revival at some piont in the future.
What Simu Liu Is Doing Next
Even if a Kim’s Convenience revival doesn’t come to be, Liu and many of his co-stars do have bright futures ahead of them. Lee wrapped production last year on the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series at Netflix and is gearing up for his The Mandalorian season 3 return, while Liu will appear in the highly anticipated Barbie movie adaptation hitting theaters this July and will return to the MCU with a Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings sequel currently in development. In the meantime, audiences can revisit their beloved performances with all of Kim’s Convenience streaming on Netflix.
