The co-hosts West Indies will take on England in the 2nd match of Group 2 in the Super 8 stages of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium Gros Islet St. Lucia on Thursday (June 20). West Indies have played phenomenal cricket in the first round of the global tournament and are unbeaten so far.
On the other hand England had to rely on Australia to give them a chance to make it to the next stage after their washout against Scotland followed by a defeat against Aussies pushed them to the wall. They came out all guns blazing against Oman and finished the run chase in just 3.1 overs. To push their net run-rate above the rest of the teams and then Australia defeated Scotland in the last match of Group B to allow the defending champions a spot in the next round.
The West Indies looked a bit scratchy in the first game against Papua New Guinea but in the next few games they found their mojo and in the last game they were at their absolute best. Playing against Afghanistan the Windies posted a mammoth first innings total of 218/5 in 20 overs thanks to a fine knock by Nicholas Pooran.
Who missed out on his century by just a couple of runs. Charles made 43 while skipper Powell and Shai Hope also chipped in with cameos scoring 26 and 25 respectively. In reply Hosein started well for the hosts. The left-arm spinner dismissed in-form Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck.
Obed McCoy picked up three wickets while Gudakesh Motie got two as the Windies bowled out Afghanistan for 114 in 16.2 overs. England on the other hand are coming off a win over Namibia. In a rain-affected encounter which was reduced to 10 overs per side England made 122 runs. The chase for Namibia was 126 runs as per the DLS method.
In reply Namibia could only muster 84 runs in their quota of 10 and lost the game by 41 runs via DLS method. In a rare scenario looking at how things have panned out in the last few years the West Indies will start this contest as favourites against the defending champions England.
England are still not at their best but looking at the pitch at the Daren Sammy Stadium it promises to be a high-scoring encounter. Can the West Indies keep their unbeaten run intact as they face defending champions England?
West Indies: Shepherd missed the last match to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. He was released from the squad and joined the team on Tuesday (June 18). He is likely to be back in the playing XI. Chase who rested in last game is expected to be back for the match against England provides depth in bowling well in the batting department.
Shai Hope and Obed McCoy are likely to miss out for the West Indies. England: Mark Wood and Will Jacks were left out of the final playing XI during the rain-affected contest against Namibia. They are expected to be back in the mix with Sam Curran and Chris Jordan making the way for them.
What to expect: Given the batting might of these two teams and the conditions at this venue we could be in for a high-scoring encounter something’s been very rare in this tournament so far. Will Jacks was left out of the England XI against Namibia but on a batting friendly surface a recall is on the cards.
Mark Wood could return to the XI as well. West Indies will have a decision to make with Obed McCoy. He made an impact after coming in for Romario Shepherd against Afghanistan. Will he retain his spot remains to be seen. Shai Hope is expected to make way for Roston Chase again.
