How The Android Flagships Compare
The Lenovo ThinkPhone is a flagship that connects seamlessly to ThinkPad laptops, but how does it compare to the more mainstream Galaxy S22?
The Lenovo ThinkPhone is made in collaboration with Motorola, but how does it compare to the popular Samsung Galaxy S22? Despite its unique use case, the Lenovo ThinkPhone looks mainstream flagships right in the eye. It uses one of the most powerful Android smartphone processors, offers a large OLED display, and features a capable camera setup. Additionally, the phone offers exclusive productivity features for ThinkPad users.
The Lenovo ThinkPhone has a 6.6-inch P-OLED display, larger than the 6.1-inch AMOLED display on the Galaxy S22. However, the ThinkPhone supports a higher refresh rate of up to 144Hz. In contrast, Galaxy S22 has a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. To protect the ThinkPhone’s display, Lenovo uses Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, whereas the S22 uses Gorilla Glass Victus Plus. The ThinkPhone also boasts MIL-STD-810H certification for durability, something lacking on the Galaxy S22. Both phones feature an aluminum frame, but Lenovo uses aramid fiber on the back panel, while the Galaxy S22 sticks to glass. An IP68 water/dust resistance rating is common on both smartphones.
The ThinkPhone Has A More Powerful Chipset
Under the hood, Lenovo ThinkPhone runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, which is about 10 percent more powerful and 30 percent more power efficient than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 on the Galaxy S22. Although the newer chip is an incremental update, it solves a lot of the power management and heat dissipation issues of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. In terms of memory and storage, the ThinkPhone comes with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage. The S22 comes in two storage variants – 8GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB.
As for the cameras, the Lenovo ThinkPhone has a 50MP (f/1.8) primary camera with optical image stabilization, a 13MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor. In the front, the smartphone has a 32MP (f/2.45) selfie shooter. In contrast, the Galaxy S22 has a better triple-rear camera setup with a 50MP (f/1.8, OIS) primary sensor, a 12MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide sensor, and a 10MP (f/2.4, OIS) telephoto sensor that offers up to 3x optical zoom. However, the Galaxy S22’s 10MP (f/2.2) selfie shooter feels outdated in 2023. The actual performance of the cameras is yet to be compared, but Samsung offers industry-leading cameras and will be hard to beat.
ThinkPhone Offers ThinkPad Connectivity
Surprisingly, the Lenovo ThinkPhone comes with a 5,000mAh battery, which is larger than the 3,700mAh battery on the Galaxy S22. Additionally, the ThinkPhone supports faster wired charging at up to 68W, compared to 25W on the S22. Both phones have an in-display fingerprint scanner and support Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and USB 3.0 connectivity. However, the Think 2 Think connectivity features make the ThinkPhone special. For instance, when using the ThinkPhone with a Lenovo ThinkPad notebook, both devices discover each other when nearby and connect seamlessly over Wi-Fi.
Then there’s the Unified Clipboard feature. Like Apple’s Universal Clipboard, Unified Clipboard on ThinkPhone helps users wirelessly transfer text or photos between the phone and ThinkPad. Other exclusive features of the ThinkPhone include Unified Notifications, File Drop, App Streaming, Advanced Webcam, and Instant Hotspot. The smartphone also features ThinkShield, a security platform offering features and software to enhance users’ security. While the Galaxy S22 features Knox Security, it lacks the PC connectivity features offered by the ThinkPhone.
Given that Lenovo ThinkPhone will ship with Android 13 and Lenovo promises three years of OS upgrades, it checks all the boxes for a mainstream flagship smartphone in 2023 and competes well with the $699 Galaxy S22. That said, the ThinkPhone offers very specific productivity-focussed features for ThinkPad users, which means the market for the smartphone will be more niche. Lenovo will announce the ThinkPhone‘s price and availability in the coming months.
