Pelosi in the House, a documentary from HBO, takes a close look at the life and career of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, including her role in January 6th. The documentary was directed by Alexandra Pelosi, the youngest daughter of Nancy. The last section of the movie centers on the January 6th Capitol Building attack. In this attack Pro-Trump demonstrators stormed the building in an attempt to interfere with the results of the 2020 election.

The film was shot in a cinéma vérité style, where the subjects of the film are documented in an observational manner. This filmmaking technique ended up being an excellent choice when it came to documenting the January 6th attack as it happened, largely due to the fact that it allows the events of the day to flow in a linear and coherent fashion. The documentary’s filming style helped put the viewers in the shoes of the people who ended up under siege. This style of filming also would make it a valuable asset for the subsequent investigation into the events of the day.

The January 6, 2021 insurrection on the capitol was featured prominently in the last third of the Pelosi in the House movie. Although the event was widely captured by news cameras, the film was able to obtain a unique perspective as the documentary was being filmed while the attack unfolded. Alexandra Pelosi was inside the capitol building during the siege and was able to capture her mother’s reaction to the unfolding events. Alexandra’s husband, Dutch journalist Michiel Vos, was outside the building covering the incident.

This segment of the film starts with Nancy being filmed as she watches President Trump’s speech to his supporters egging them on. Nancy reacts with visible disgust to this, unsurprisingly. As the crowds began to grow outside the building the viewer can feel the tension growing between the members of congress. Eventually the mob breaches the building and Nancy, along with her daughter and the film crew, are ushered through a secret underground passage. They are then whisked away to an undisclosed location with Nancy’s disbelief and anger being evident, as at one point she states, “I’m going to punch him [Donald Trump] out, and I’m going to go to jail, and I’m going to be happy.
