Elden Ring‘s much anticipated 1.08 update – also known as the Colosseum DLC – has finally come. Fans of FromSoftware’s smash hit have long been waiting for the developer to introduce its first DLC, which was rumored for months following files discovered via datamines. Many players have already journeyed through the Lands Between in numerous playthroughs since the game came out 10 months ago, and the Colosseum is about to give them another incentive to keep those journeys going.

There has been much speculation about what the Colosseum update contains. Originally, fans expected Elden Ring‘s first DLC to be related to the Badlands after a ransomware attack on Bandai Namco claimed to leak the title of the game’s first DLC, Barbarians of the Badlands. However, in November, Elden Ring dataminers found colosseum-related content in the game’s unused files. With hints like the delayed release of an Elden Ring strategy guide suggesting an update was coming to the game soon, players began to believe FromSoftware was finally going to make use of the Lands Between’s colosseums.

Elden Ring’s Colosseum DLC Has New Multiplayer Modes, PvP Balance Changes, & More

The unveiling of the Colosseum DLC confirmed players’ suspicions. The 1.08 update is opening up Elden Ring‘s colosseum for a new multiplayer feature. Accompanying this addition are changes to PvP balancing, making the Colosseum DLC a revitalization of Elden Ring‘s multiplayer experience. The 1.08 update also comes with the patching and general balancing alterations standard of FromSoftware’s previous updates. The details of the Colosseum DLC and the 1.08 patch notes shared by Bandai Namco are discussed in further detail below.

Elden Ring’s Colosseum Update Introduces New Multiplayer Game Modes

Elden Ring‘s Colosseum DLC will make use of the game’s three gladiator arenas located in Limgrave, Caelid, and Leyndell. In these “Colosseum areas,” the Tarnished can engage in a set of PvP activities that range from free-for-alls to team deathmatches, as shown in Bandai Namco‘s trailer. Players can either join in these skirmishes alone or use group codes to play with friends. In addition to this, players now have five new hairstyle options they can customize their fighters with before heading into the arena.

Each of the Colosseum areas comes with its own set of rules and game modes, explains Bandai Namco. The Colosseum area in Elden Ring‘s Limgrave region features two game modes: United Combat, in which two teams of respawnable players fight in a timed battle that is won by whichever team gains the most points; and Combat Ordeal, in which the Tarnished battle in a timed free-for-all where the winner is decided by who gains the most points. Leyndell’s Royal Colosseum features the Duel Mode, in which two players enter a fight that is decided by whoever kills the other first. Finally, Caelid’s Colosseum has all of these modes but allows players to use their Spirit Ashes in battle.

Elden Ring Has Nerfed Staggering In PvP

With all the additions to the game’s multiplayer systems, it only makes sense that FromSoftware has tinkered with the balance of Elden Ring‘s PvP in the 1.08 update. The biggest change is that the poise damage of almost all physical weapons has been lowered. The weapons affected by this nerf include Straight Swords, Thrusting Swords, Heavy Thrusting Swords, Curved Swords, Axes, Spears, Twinblades, and Katanas. Additionally, the Incantation Bestial Sling and the Spell Carian Slice also had their poise damage reduced. Previously, poise damage did not play an important role in PvP battles, but the new multiplayer battles like United Combat and Combat Ordeal may necessitate nerfing poise damage to prevent players from being staggered too often.

Thrusting weapons and shields were also nerfed. Thrusting weapons had their counterattack damage reduced, and guard efficiency when attacking was lowered for certain weapon types. These changes will likely keep multiplayer battles in Elden Ring‘s Colosseum more aggressive and fun, as players will not be able to rely on counterattacks and blocking as they can in PvE.

Elden Ring Introduced General Patches In 1.08 Update

In addition to the Colosseum DLC’s enhancements to multiplayer interactions, the 1.08 update comes along with a host of patches for Elden Ring. Unlike the PvP changes, these updates affect play more generally, whether they be alterations to weapons or bug fixes. Following is a table detailing all that’s in the update:

Fixed a bug that sometimes prevented consumable items from being replenished when teleporting to a grace from the map.

Increased the speed of some attacks and reduced the recovery time for two-handed Twinblades, Reapers, Fists, and Claws.

Fixed a bug where stamina would replenish when switching to a crouching position while running.

Slightly increased the speed of crouching and rolling attacks of Colossal Swords.

Fixed a bug where Spell, Incantation, and item input actions were ignored while guarding against attacks.

Increased the stagger damage of Axes’ guard counters.

Fixed incorrect physical attack values of some attacks of the Serpent-Hunter weapon.

Increased poise when attacking with two-handed Hammers.

Fixed a bug that prevented the follow-up attack from occurring when the Black Sword Incantation was activated with a Sacred Seal in the left hand.

Increased poise damage of Claws (Weapon Arts remain unchanged).

Fixed a bug where the attack power of the right-hand weapon was sometimes applied when casting the Inescapable Frenzy Incantation with a two-handed Sacred Seal in the left hand.

Increased poise value during the active part of the Stamp (Upward Cut / Sweep) Weapon Art.

Fixed a bug that could cause multiple damage instances when certain Spells and Incantations were casted while jumping.

Increased poise damage of the weapon slash part of the Transient Moonlight Weapon Art, and reduced the poise damage of the magic wave.

Fixed a bug that caused Weapon Arts to be incorrectly used with specific combinations of weapon and Weapon Arts.

Reduced the speed Thrusting Swords and Heavy Thrusting Swords crouching attacks.

Reduced the stagger caused by double-handed Heavy Thrusting Swords jumping attacks.

Reduced poise damage of Hammers, Great Hammers, and some Colossal Weapons. Weapon Arts remain unchanged.

Reduced the poise damage of the Cragblade Weapon Art.

Reduced hitbox duration of the flame portion of the Flaming Strike Weapon Art.

Reduced poise damage of the Flame of the Redmanes Weapon Art.

Reduced the time it takes to activate the guard part of the Shield Bash Weapon Art.

Reduced the poise damage of the Gravity Bolt Weapon Art.

When it comes to the overall balance changes, Elden Ring has focused on buffing weapons rather than nerfing them. Though poise damage was largely nerfed in PvP, some weapons and spells actually had their poise damage increased in both PvE and PvP; among the most notable of these are the fan-favorite Claws. Colossal Swords also received yet another buff with Elden Ring‘s latest patch, as the speed of their rolling and crouched attacks has increased. This will make Colossal Weapons much stronger in boss battles like Astel, who requires lots of range and dodging to defeat.

For the bug fixes, most of the updates are rather minor. FromSoftware has gotten Elden Ring to the point where players experience very little glitches or errors. Hence, most of the fixes involve niche situations where specific Spells and Incantations work incorrectly when a specific item is also being held.

The Tarnished can now finally enjoy Elden Ring‘s first DLC. After 10 months of waiting, FromSoftware has brought new life into its game. And now with PvP being made so integral to the Colosseum, fans can more easily play Elden Ring with their friends.
