Darth Vader's and Padmé's Handmaids in Star Wars

In the latest issue of Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith manages to recruit the most disturbing team possible when it comes to Padmé’s legacy.

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Darth Vader #30

Darth Vader has recruited new agents to the dark side, and they’re extremely problematic when it comes to the legacy of Padmé, his late wife. Taking place in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader is working to establish order in the Star Wars galaxy by any means necessary. While he’s also been contending with the return of Padmé’s most trusted handmaid Sabé by making her his new ally, the Dark Lord has now corrupted the memory of his wife even further.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In the new Darth Vader #30 from Greg Pak and Luke Ross, Lord Vader has begun a campaign against the world of Skako Minor and Jul Tambor, grandson of former Separatist leader Wat Tambor. Having sent Sabé to take out Tambor and his growing revolution against the Empire, the former Queen’s Shadow agrees to serve Vader in the hopes she can spare the world from the Dark Lord’s wrath, killing one instead of Vader slaughtering thousands. However, Sabé’s absence sees her fellow handmaids infiltrating Vader’s flagship known as the Executor, though the Dark Lord quickly discovers their intrusion. Facing all the self-proclaimed Amidalans just as he did back on Naboo when he visited his wife’s grave, Vader incapacitated the handmaids before offering them the same chance he gave Sabé.

Darth Vader Is Corrupting His Wife’s Memory After Empire Strikes Back

Darth Vader Recruits All Of Padmé's Handmaids

While the handmaids would never outright agree to serve the man who killed Padmé, Darth Vader’s revelation that Sabé now serves him and has been captured by Tambor motivates them to join his side, albeit temporarily. Likewise, they’ve also hacked into Vader’s armor, gaining the self-destruct codes for the Executor should he try and kill them. Nevertheless, Padmé’s handmaids being convinced to join a Sith Lord is still a large desecration of her memory, regardless of Vader’s claims that Padmé would have supported him and his mission to obtain order.

In truth, Padmé would have never tolerated his corrupted husband and his dark methods to achieve said order, though Vader is seemingly blind to this fact. Regardless, the Dark Lord now has an impressive team of Amidalans which feels incredibly problematic on the most personal and deep level. After all, each handmaid carries a significant resemblance to Padmé herself, especially Sabé who was her chief decoy during the prequel trilogy.

Darth Vader is literally surrounding himself with the faces of his late wife, an incredibly dark choice that must be quite compromising. Likewise, he’s actively destroying Padmé’s legacy at the same time by corrupting them all to his side. While they all have their ulterior and altruistic reasons for doing so, it doesn’t change the fact that they’re aiding the dark side by serving Vader himself in the Star Wars galaxy. Darth Vader #30 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
