Asteroid City Gets R-Rating, Wes Anderson to Appeal

According to Film Ratings, Focus Features’ upcoming romantic comedy-drama Asteroid City has officially been given an R-rating from the Motion Pictures Association of America for “brief graphic nudity.” However, this may not be its final rating since director Wes Anderson is currently planning to make an appeal to the Classification and Rating Administration’s Appeals Board change MPAA’s decision.

Should Anderson’s appeal not be successful, this won’t actually be the acclaimed filmmaker’s first R-rated film. Most of his previously directed movies including Bottle Rocket, The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and The French Dispatch had all earned an R-rating.

Described as “a poetic meditation on the meaning of life,” Asteroid City is written and directed by Wes Anderson. The ensemble cast will include long-time Wes Anderson collaborators, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Liev Schreiber, Tony Revolori, Jeff Goldblum, and Jack Ryan.

It will also feature some new A-list collaborators Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Scarlett Johansson, Maya Hawke, Sophia Lillis, and more. The project is being produced by Jeremy Dawson and Steven Rales.

“It tells the story of a fictional American desert town circa 1955 and its Junior Stargazer convention, which brings together students and parents from across the country for scholarly competition, rest/recreation, comedy, drama, romance, and more,” reads the official synopsis.
