One fan theory could explain how Jennifer Walters can break the fourth wall in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. She-Hulk was among a select few Marvel Comics characters who routinely broke the fourth wall, often speaking directly to the reader and even occasionally hopping out of the page. This translated brilliantly onto the screen in Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on Disney+, which marked the first instance of an MCU character breaking the fourth wall, and the season finale, “Whose Show Is This?,” even featured the titular hero jumping out of the series and into an episode of Marvel Studios Assembled in order to confront KEVIN.

This won’t be the last time the MCU sees fourth wall breaks, since Deadpool is perhaps the most famous user of this technique, and he’ll be making his way to the MCU in 2024’s Deadpool 3. Despite fourth wall breaks being an entertaining addition to the MCU, the ability is a strange departure for the franchise, and though it might not need an in-universe explanation, fans have taken to the internet in an effort to decipher how certain characters can demonstrate this particular level of self-awareness. One theory, posed on Reddit, suggests that it could be events from the MCU’s Infinity Saga that allow She-Hulk to speak to her audience.

The Infinity Gauntlet Could Have Caused She-Hulk’s Fourth Wall Breaks

The theory poses that it’s the use of the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet that grants characters the ability to break the fourth wall, assuming that the massive levels of cosmic energy would surely have permanent after-effects on whoever used the stones. The Infinity Stones represented every aspect of reality, and each universe in Marvel’s multiverse has their own set of stones, so perhaps using the stones enabled the user to peer through the multiverse. While this wouldn’t directly relate to She-Hulk’s ability, her cousin, Bruce, did use the Infinity Stones in order to restore those who disappeared in the five-year Blip, which might explain She-Hulk’s hold over the power.

Before Thanos destroyed the Infinity Stones at the beginning of Avengers: Endgame, the coveted gems granted whoever held them with some remarkable abilities. Loki was able to control peoples’ minds in The Avengers using the Mind Stone, the Guardians of the Galaxy collectively used the Power Stone to eradicate Ronan, and Doctor Strange routinely uses the Time Stone to get himself out of trouble. It’s not hard to imagine that the use of the Infinity Stones would have some permanent effects on the user, and with the concept of the multiverse becoming very prominent, breaking the fourth wall could be a very valuable gift for several characters.

She-Hulk Is Better At Controlling Her Hulk Abilities

She-Hulk has never used the Infinity Stones in the MCU, and didn’t even become a superhero until after the stones had been destroyed, but this theory can still apply to her thanks to her cousin’s use of the stones in Endgame. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 1, “A Normal Amount of Rage,” saw Jennifer Walters gain her Hulk powers by being exposed to some of Bruce Banner’s blood after a car accident. If her cousin’s Hulk abilities can be transferred through his blood, then surely the effects of his use of the Infinity Stones would also transfer, which could have allowed She-Hulk to break the fourth wall.

Almost immediately after gaining her Hulk abilities, She-Hulk showed practically complete control over the difficult powers that her cousin had suffered with for years. While it took Bruce eighteen months in a gamma lab to be able to combine both the Banner and Hulk sides of his personality, Jen was instantly able to hold onto her consciousness while in her She-Hulk form. This all suggests that, if Bruce had transferred an ability to break the fourth wall to his cousin, then it would make sense for her to have a better handle on it than Bruce.

If This Is The Case, Why Can’t Bruce Break The Fourth Wall?

This begs the question, why didn’t Bruce Banner ever break the fourth wall if he had this ability since snapping his fingers in Avengers: Endgame? Bruce had been operating as the Hulk for well over a decade, getting used to his abilities and becoming comfortable with his remarkable powers long before snapping his fingers, so perhaps he simply didn’t realize that this unusual new ability had been added to his repertoire. It could also be a matter of control, since it was only very recently that Bruce had managed to have a handle on his powers, he may not have been able to control his fourth wall-breaking ability.

In She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 1, Bruce noticed She-Hulk break the fourth wall, suggesting he may have been able to sense this ability despite not being able to control it. He is the only character who notices She-Hulk speaking to the audience, in a scene reminiscent of one Fleabag moment, the inspiration behind She-Hulk. It’s even possible that this ability could never have manifested in Bruce, as the experiments he performed on himself to combine the “brains and the brawn” could have interfered with this power presenting itself, perhaps leaving it dormant in his DNA before being passed onto Jen.

What If…? Characters Also Used The Infinity Stones (& Saw The Watcher)

It’s revealed in Avengers: Endgame that the Infinity Stones emit gamma radiation, which is what convinces the Hulk that he is the only one capable of surviving a snap of his fingers. It could be this prolonged exposure to the radiation of the Infinity Stones that causes the fourth wall-breaking ability to present itself. A prime example of this would be in the Disney+ animated series, What If…?, which features a version of Ultron who acquires the six Infinity Stones, and also a darker version of Doctor Strange, both of whom seem to demonstrate a similar ability to She-Hulk’s.

During What If…? season 1, episode 8, “What If… Ultron Won?,” Ultron, with the power of all six Infinity Stones, manages to hear the Watcher and break through the multiverse, something very similar to how She-Hulk breaks out of the She-Hulk season finale. In episode 4, “What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?,” Strange Supreme uses the Time Stone for centuries to try and save Christine, and then converses with Marvel’s Cosmic Observer, the Watcher, begging for help as his universe ends. These moments seem to prove that the Infinity Stones certainly have an effect on the user, and could explain She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’s fourth wall breaks.
